Whether you are entertaining festive guests or in need of a little extra holiday cheer, whether it is a rom-com, Christmas classic, or tearjerker, THR has pulled together a selection of films that define the winter season. It is never too early, in our view, to get started watching festive films and spirit-filled specials–there are too many holiday classics and new movies combined to be consumed by just December. We rounded up an assortment of options, from family-friendly fare to holiday romances to older black-and-white classics to dysfunctional family comedies to Christmas noir films to scary Christmas movies for adults (yes, we are talking options). Each film on the list is new, and plays around with the Christmas spirit and holidays as the central themes.
Every watch of Elf or Home Alone is a bridge back to the feeling of holiday cheer, just as effective as the Christmas songs. From Christmas comedies such as Elf and Home Alone, to family favorites such as The Polar Express and A Christmas Story, you will find it here. Santa Claus is heartwarming and funny in a way that stands the test of time, and it is an all-around great Christmas movie for families. Shazam, which follows a 14-year-old foster child who gains the power to turn himself into a superhero, could definitely be read as a Christmas movie as Shazam takes place around the holidays and is about family and love and togetherness.

It does not get more quintessentially Christmas than Home Alone, a film about Kevin McCallister (Macaulay Culkin), a child who is accidentally left behind while the rest of his family goes on vacation during the holidays. We are leery of this sequel to A Christmas Story, one of the most beloved holiday films ever made A Christmas Story, one of the most beloved holiday films ever made. Say that you want a movie that is not about Christmas, but one that captures the stakes of Christmas – and what it is like to be lonely during the season of togetherness. If romance is not your thing, then maybe a Christmas horror film will do.
Christmas has become about many things for people throughout the years, and the films here kind of mirror that. I know that we are all supposed to be saying that spending time with loved ones is the most important part of Christmas…but this may have been the case before we had a bazillion incredible holiday movies to choose from. So, we sorted the movies here using our ranking formula, which factors the years of the films release into the amount of reviews, to create an ultimate list of holiday movies that will make even the cynical reviewers heart melt.

As we approach the Christmas season, we will keep an ongoing New On Netflix For Christmas list, so consider this as an early look, but we will keep updating when more titles are announced. Fortunately, The Hallmark Channel and Hallmark Movies & Mysterys share a similar approach this time of year, because the channels are once again offering up 40 brand-new holiday movies to enjoy. While we wait for an official announcement on Hallmark Channels lineup, you can set your calendars to include 12 of the buzziest new Christmas movies from 2022, below.
